30 West Fit expands to larger location, increases training staff

When Dominic Anastasio opened 30 West Fit, he was a solo personal trainer who started with 10 appointments a week. Fast forward to today. 30 West Fit has expanded into a new space in the same building at 30 W. Rahn Rd. in Kettering, but in a spot that doubles the size of his original location.

In addition to the expanded location, 30 West Fit’s team continues to grow, and there are now six trainers, including Centerville native Chase Meade, who brought his clients from Go the Distance to merge with 30 West Fit.

An Oakwood High School graduate, Dominic originally planned to pursue a career as a health and physical education teacher. Then he earned a degree in exercise science at Sinclair Community College and contemplated a role working for a fitness center or perhaps a health care facility as a trainer. Eventually, the former physique competitor realized that he wanted to carve his own niche guiding clients with their fitness and nutrition goals, which led to the launch of 30 West Fit in 2015.

“Securing a loan, leasing the space, buying the equipment and opening for business was a leap of faith, and it was scary because the future is uncertain, but this is my passion and I believed this would be a success,” Dominic said. “It is exciting to expand. We had outgrown the old space, and in this new location we have more equipment and more space for functional and sports training.”

Look for 30 West Fit to add more group classes this year, Dominic says.

Workouts at 30 West Fit are 30 minutes and designed to generate maximum results in minimal time. Each 30-minute training session incorporates strength training, high intensity cardio, flexibility and core customized to the client’s personal goals. Dominic takes the same approach with nutrition planning, developing a sustainable meal plan that helps support the overall wellness objectives.

30 West Fit offers a complimentary fitness assessment for prospective clients. This involves a meeting where you visit the facility and talk to a trainer about your goals, and then Dominic and his team create a workout and nutrition plan targeted specifically for your objectives.

Personal trainers often the key for clients’ sustainable fitness

The beginning of March represents the approaching arrival of spring for most people, but for personal training studios like 30 West Fit, it is one of the busiest months of the year. Though wellness-inspired New Year’s resolutions are made on New Year’s Day, many of those people with good intentions encounter obstacles and recognize that – to start moving forward with results – they need guidance.

“Traditional gyms see an influx of new members in early January because the new year offers an ideal time for a fresh start, and people see it as the ideal time to begin working out, losing weight and feeling better,” said Dominic Anastasio, a certified personal trainer, and founder and owner of 30 West Fit in Kettering. “Some lose interest after a month or two, and never gain momentum. Others spend a few weeks going to the gym, working out half-heartedly and giving up because of boredom, a lack of motivation, or a combination of both.

“Our new year is in late February/early March when people realize that, to reach goals, they need professional guidance and motivation in a more private setting,” Dominic added. “Wellness is part of a journey. It’s all about starting and maintaining a well-rounded fitness and nutrition regimen that you can sustain for the long term as a lifestyle. Having a trainer who is genuinely committed to helping you reach your goals can make a difference in short-term and long-term results.”

Statistics show that only a small percentage of well-intentioned men and women who strive to lose weight and improve their overall wellness follow through and transform goals into achieved results. Among the reasons a majority of New Year’s fitness resolutions fall by the wayside by March include a lack of familiarity with the right blend of exercises and uncertainty of proper form and technique, Dominic believes. Then there is perhaps the primary culprit – the challenge of making the time commitment.

“Life is busy, and it is common for someone to say, ‘When it gets less hectic at work, I will start my workout plan’ and “When my kids schedules slow down, I will have more time to exercise,” Dominic said. “These are the reasons people tend to give when they are asked what is preventing them from fully moving forward with their fitness goals.

“Considering that most people have busy schedules year-round year after year, there will likely never be an ideal period when you have unlimited time and energy to focus on exercise and nutrition,” Dominic added. “Making your wellness a priority is a decision that only you can make, but once you do and have the right motivation and guidance, you start seeing results and feeling better, and you are more likely to sustain that momentum.”

Accountability and motivation are among the most valuable benefits of working with a personal trainer, Dominic explains.

“Training sessions are appointments to work out, and most people are driven to keep those appointments compared to going to the gym on their own,” Dominic explained. “Then, when you walk through the doors and your training session begins, a trainer makes sure you have the proper posture and technique so you perform the exercises correctly and efficiently.

“You are more apt to stop at the first sign of fatigue when you are on your own, but with the guidance and motivation from your trainer, you give all you have to complete each set,” he added. “When consistency and time, this leads to positive results.”

Just as you allocate money into investments that you hope will reap financial reward in the future, exercise is a long-term investment into your wellness vision that can generate dividends with how you look and feel, and your health and well-being, Dominic believes.

A former physique competitor who earned a degree in exercise science at Sinclair Community College, Dominic launched 30 West Fit in 2015. He recently added three trainers and expanded into a larger space in the same building, allowing the studio to accommodate more clients.

30 West Fit offers a complimentary fitness assessment for prospective clients. This involves a meeting where you visit the facility and talk to a trainer about your goals, and then Dominic and his team create a workout and nutrition plan targeted specifically for your objectives.

Exercise and nutrition complement one other, and Dominic establishes a fitness and nutrition plan for each new client. The 30 West Fit team has a diverse group of experienced personal trainers, but one common trait they share is a genuine commitment to creating sustainable fitness for their clients. That is what drives them.

“When many people start training, they are at a low point personally and/or physically, and the first step is actually walking through the 30 West Fit doors,” 30 West Fit personal trainer Erik Smith said. “Then we strive to transform that first visit into a consistent wellness plan.

“Fitness is a journey. It takes consistency, proper form and technique, nutrition and motivation to get results,” Erik said. “It’s exciting to see clients accomplish goals they never imagined were possible and feel better physically and mentally because that has a positive impact on their overall quality of life.”

30 West Fit’s tips for maintaining motivation for your fitness regimen

At any gym across the country – whether it is a YMCA or recreation center, a chain facility or a personal training studio – members are at different life stages and fitness levels. What they have in common is the goal to improve their wellness.

“If you feel you are not in ideal shape, and you are determined to get healthier again, remember that you do not get results and reach your ultimate objectives overnight,” said Adam Bolden, a personal trainer at 30 West Fit in Kettering. “It takes dedication and work every day, and It is a journey that begins with the first step of getting started, and then extends to days and weeks to form a fledgling habit, and with the right guidance, it will hopefully become part of who you are for months and then years.

Maybe it’s fueled by a desire to fit better in your clothes. Perhaps it’s a sudden decision to make a lifestyle change to shed weight for your overall health. No matter the reason for launching a fitness regimen, all too often many people give up on their objectives.

Reasons might range from a lack of time, not understanding how to use equipment, not knowing what exercises to incorporate, or just boredom. For lots of would-be fitness enthusiasts, though, the reason is they just do not like moving their body.

Perhaps it is a matter of connecting exercise to discomfort. Mindfulness works as a motivation technique to help beginners sustain their fledgling fitness program and turn it into a long-term welcomed habit.

Here are tips from 30 West Fit on how to become more aware of the present moment on what you are doing, instead of dwelling on past failures or projecting into the future dreading how much work it will take to reach your wellness goals.

Determine specifically why you are working out

It is challenging to remain dedicated to a fitness regimen when you do not define why you are doing it. Instead of generic terms like “I am exercising because I want to lose weight” or “I am working out because it is healthy,” define what motivates you at a deeper level. “I must exercise and reach weight goals to get in better physical condition to I will be there to see my son graduate from high school” or “I will exercise and become more active so I can join my spouse on long-distance hikes” are examples.

Why do you want to be fit and healthy? Remind yourself each day. When you are tempted to eat something that could derail you from your wellness goals, or skip a workout because you feel tired, remember why you want to be fit and healthy.

Remind yourself how good exercise makes you feel

When you are feeling drained or lacking motivation – or when you are tempted to join your friends at Happy Hour instead of driving to the gym, walking through the doors and beginning your personal training session – envision how good it feels when you work out. Remind yourself that getting there is the biggest challenge. When you finish, you know that you are maintaining your momentum and taking one step closer to your goals.

Don’t settle into a mundane routine

Variety is important, not just to work all of your muscle groups, but also to keep your passion for exercise stoked. Even the best workout routine can become stale over time. That is not a good thing because you stop looking forward to the experience and find excuses that often derail your goals.

“When many people start training, they are at a low point personally and/or physically, and the first step is actually walking through the 30 West Fit doors,” 30 West Fit personal trainer Erik Smith said. “Then we strive to transform that first visit into a consistent wellness plan that is based around workouts that vary but engage all of the muscle groups every week.”

Many 30 West Fit clients have worked out at gyms before, but a high percentage of them have not achieved desired results because they were not implementing proper form, which is one of the most important elements of making the aforementioned tips lead to reaching goals.

“If you don’t know which exercises are most effective for the goals you have, you are unlikely to achieve those goals,” Dominic said. “For example, if your goal is to build core strength but you spend all your time on cardio exercises, then you are unlikely to hit your goals.

“Reaching those goals requires consistency, proper form and technique, nutrition and motivation to get results,” Dominic added. “It’s fulfilling to see clients develop momentum, start seeing results, get even more inspired and accomplish goals they never imagined were possible. Having a healthy, positive mindset to accompany proper guidance is an important part of your fitness regimen.”

Dominic Anastasio’s 30 West Fit vision continues to grow

Dominic Anastasio’s 30 West Fit vision continues to grow

Fighting to complete your third set of incline dumbbell chest presses, fatigue sets in around the seventh repetition. If you were at a crowded gym working out on your own, this is likely where you would stop and move on to the next exercise. Not today; not in this case. Dominic Anastasio is your trainer, and in the wellness sanctuary of 30 West Fit, you’re encouraged to continue and successfully finish the last four lifts. You offer every ounce of energy you have, complete the round and feel the temporary burn that is accompanied by the satisfaction of being one step closer to your fitness goals.

Accountability and motivation are among the most valuable benefits of working with Dominic and his team at 30 West Fit.

When Dominic opened 30 West Fit, he started with 10 appointments a week. Three years later, he has 65 clients, and with two additional trainers, 30 West Fit has is preparing to expand to a larger location in the same building in early 2019.

January is the busiest month for traditional fitness facilities, like YMCAs and chain gyms. With good intentions to shed weight and feel better, many people sign up for memberships, only to lose interest after a month or two. Then there are others who join a fitness center, spend a few minutes on a couple machines with a half-hearted effort before walking out because of boredom, a lack of motivation or a combination of both.

“My new year is late February when people realize that, to reach goals, they prefer professional guidance and motivation in a more private setting,” Dominic said. “Wellness is part of a journey.
